Leader Training

Training is indispensable!!
Training builds the confidence of our leaders and helps ensure success.
What Makes a Cub Scout Leader “Trained”?  You know, so that they can wear that neat little “Trained” patch on their shirts?  Well, the answer is simple:
- Cub Scout Den Leaders and Committee Members are considered “trained” when they have completed
        1) Youth Protection Training
        2) New Leader Essentials, and
        3) the Cub Scout Leader Specific (CSLS) training for their position.
- Cubmasters and Assistant Cubmasters are considered “trained” when they have completed
        1) Youth Protection Training
        2) New Leader Essentials,
        3) Cubmaster and Assistant Cubmaster Leader Specific Training, and
        4) Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.

That’s all there is to it!

Now – it’s the Pack’s expectation that everyone that holds a Den Leadership position be trained in their respective field.  If you’re a Den Leader – new or old – and are NOT trained, please check the calendar for upcoming training dates and make arrangements to attend!  Hey – you want to show off your “Trained” patch don’t you??

Many training events are available online at the BSA Online Learning Center, which you may complete at your convenience via the internet. You will need to setup a profile at MyScouting.org to record your online training. Please be sure to print certificates of completion of online training - keep one copy for your records and give one to your Pack Committe Chair.

Youth Protection Training

Effective June 1, 2010
  -  Youth Protection Training is required for all registered
      volunteers

  -  New Leaders are required to take Youth Protection training
before they submit their application for registration. The
certificate of completion for this training must be
submitted at the time application is made and before volunteer service with youth begins.

-  Youth Protection Training must be taken every two years.  If a volunteer's Youth Protection Training record is not current at the
time of re-charter, the volunteer will not be re-registerd.

The Fast Start Training Program

All Den Leaders are required to take the Fast Track Online Training for their specific den.  This is the one of the first classes every new leader should take.  It includes The New Tiger Cub Den Leader, The New Wolf/Bear Cub Scout Den Leader, The New Webelos Den Leader, The New Cubmaster, and The New Pack Committee Member.   It is available online at http://www.doubleknot.com/openrosters/ViewOrgPageLink.asp?LinkKey=5427&orgkey=1312

Basic Leader Training

Basic Leader Training is a half-day session you can attend that is offered periodically by our local council or district. Or, can be taken online. It has two parts:

  • New Leader Essentials—for all leaders in Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, and Venturing.
  • Leader Specific Training is by registered leader position: Wolf/Bear Cubmasters, pack committee chairmen and members, Tiger Cub den leaders, Cub Scout den leaders, and Webelos den leaders.

Volunteers can attend supplemental training, including events like the monthly district roundtable, where veteran leaders share their experience and ideas for use with the upcoming monthly pack theme or special activity; the annual district or council pow wow, featuring sessions on games, crafts, skits and puppets, ceremonies, and much more; and a University of Scouting, with similar how-to sessions available for leaders from all programs.
